What We’re Talking About

Mabel and Doris promote the opening of their new flower shopExamples

OK, time to put our money where our mouth is because actually it’s so much easier to show you what we’re talking about rather than just tell you!

Below are two examples of an elevator pitch. They both give the same information but in different styles. We think the second presentation is a better way of telling people about yourself, simply because it has more personality.

OPTION A

My name is Joan Smith. I’m a Financial Planning Manager My job is to help people with their finances and offer impartial advice. I work with business and personal customers to help them with their business financing, personal investments, retirement funds, estate and tax planning and any other matters that come within my area.

There is no charge for this service and the bank pays me a salary so, when giving you advice I am not looking for commission. I enjoy talking to people and I would like to help you with your business or personal financial plans so please don’t hesitate to contact me. I would also welcome referrals to anyone who needs help with their financial planning. Again my name is Joan Smith and I’m a Financial Planning Manager.

OPTION B

Hi, I’m Joan Smith. And if you’re one of those people who turn pale and feel clammy at the very thought of a bit of Financial Planning, fear not I’m here to help.

Yes I’m a Financial Planning Manager and yes I’m afraid I will want to talk money, but I see my role as lending a helping hand, a listening ear, tea and biscuits and maybe the odd bit of constructive advice on your business or personal investments. Once we’ve got those out of the way – and if you’re still hanging on in there – we could talk Retirement as well as Estate and Tax Planning. And if that’s making you come over queasy again, let me assure you, there’s absolutely no fee at all for this. Better still, my advice is unbiased because the nice people at my bank pay me a salary, so no commission considerations. So there it is, putting a few financial safeguards in place might not be such an unsettling experience after all. I obviously also welcome referrals to anyone else looking for my kind of help and promise I’ll be gentle with them. Again my name is Joan Smith and I’m a Financial Planning Manager.
